Pulmonary Medicine is the specialty in Internal Medicine which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the lung. This includes various testing methods to help make the diagnosis, establish the extent of disease and determine the response to therapy.
Common lung conditions include asthma, pneumonia, emphysema, bronchitis, tumors of the lung, and various inhalation injuries to the lungs, as well as many other less frequent lung problems.
In the hospital setting, in addition to the above, Pulmonary Medicine also encompasses management of patients on mechanical ventilators and the overall management of critically-ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
Pulmonary Function Lab
The Department of Pulmonary Medicine operates a comprehensive testing facility to assist the physician in the diagnosis of lung disease and to evaluate a patient's pulmonary status. Testing is performed on state-of-the-art equipment. By having the patient perform a series of breathing exercises we can provide the physician with a comprehensive report on the patient's lung function.
